This Isn’t Your Parents’ Retirement

businesswoman-on-steps-with-orange-umbrellaThose of you “baby boomer” women who were born between 1946 – 1964 have been trailblazing pioneers in every area of your lives. You have consistently fought against a status quo that limited your options and suppressed your confidence. Is it any wonder, then, that as you approach “retirement” you would question just exactly what retirement means, and what that means for the rest of your life – a life that may continue for another 30+ years?

According to Gail Rentsch, author of Smart Women Don’t Retire – They Break Free, “Retirement is a radical idea. It suggests we are about to be launched from something familiar and comfortable into an unknown or, some would say, a downright boring place.”

Those of you who are professional women, and who have built an established career, may be wondering:

  • What you will do if you no longer have the things you’ve spent your life focused on?
  • What will it feel like to lose the status, respect and access that came with your high-level position; if the prestige and power disappears once you are no longer working? Who will you be without your work identity?
  • How you will develop a new sense of identity and your place in the community without your job, your title and your business card to tell people who you are?
  • How you will spend your time when you’re no longer working full time?
  • Will a retirement of full time leisure be enough for you? And if not, what will?
  • Do you want to work or do volunteer work? If yes, how much do you want to work?
  • How will your relationships change?
  • How will you replace the sense of connection that former work colleagues provided?
  • What about money? Are you financially secure enough that you don’t need to worry about money for the next 30+ years?
  • How will you continue to protect your health?
  • What is your vision for your retirement?
  • What’s ahead for you?

The process of tackling this distinct transitional stage is new territory for women. You know you need to prepare, but perhaps you aren’t certain how to go about it or whether it’s even possible. I can assure you – it’s possible!

Retirement is about rebuilding and reshaping your role in the world - whether the activity you engage in is for money or not. Retirement is fluid. It’s not some rigid, well-defined target. It’s a shifting, changing state that brings together work, education and leisure time, and defines it in terms that work best for you. It is an opportunity for you to break new ground in your social world and in society-at-large.

This is the beginning of a very new life. You will find yourself starting all over again: engaging in new activities, making new friends; perhaps finding a new source of income, and most importantly, finding a new purpose that aligns with who you are and who you want to be in this next chapter of your life.

Retirement is as flexible and creative as you make it. There are an amazing amount of choices, and this is the time when you need the help of a professional coach who can help you remain physically, emotionally and intellectually at the top of your game!
