Evelyn, I agree, the "us vs them" thing is a real ugly concern, one that will really only be deflated as WE deflate it ... w/our growing numbers, our "getting younger as we get older" reality & mentality. I believe in the philosophy--we're only as old as we act (note, I didn't say, as we look!).

My "Maverick" reference IS in regards to my next book, the bio of Jack Kelly, "A Maverick Life: The Jack Kelly Story."

Linda - so true, and I know that's from your own experience with the powers that be in Hollywood. What I hope never happens is with our "new found" power (I say that with total irony) it doesn't become us vs. them with younger women. I hope that we become partners in changing perceptions about what aging does and doesn't mean for women. The path we're cutting will only serve to benefit younger women who come up behind us - and that's a great thing!

Do I sense a new book in the works, i.e. "Maverick"?

I'm behind you, Evelyn, especially when you use the term, "Maverick." These days I've a special bond w/that word ... but that's another story. Literally. Along those "Maverick" lines--a la Hollywood, TV, movies, etc--I'm happy Tinseltown FINALLY seems to get it. The industry is driven by dollars, which dollars are being spent on their product, & they're suddenly waking up to realize the population is aging, yet that aging population is more vibrant, growing, & has more dispensable income than the younger darlings they previously catered to w/o end.

I think it all shows that we--those 40+++ women--have the upper hand. We vote w/our pocketbooks. We tell the Powers That Be in Hollywood who we want to see on the screen, small or large, & what sort of age & social groups we want portrayed. We're in the driver's seat now ... & IMHO, that means we need to get busy steering the marketplace so this isn't just a fad, but becomes a way of life.

We'll always have young people, & that's certainly good news. But the fact is--we're growing younger post-40 folks, too, & it's about time we become first class citizens to all who want our hard-earned dollars ... & that includes Hollywood. Especially Hollywood, because that's where a lot of the societal trends grow legs.

You got it, Carol! Life is full of these pesky ironies, isn't it? Oh well, we 40+ (+++) women will just keep rockin and doing what we've been doing. By refusing to be invisible we are changing the face of what it means to "age" in America!

You go, Evelyn! And a salute right back at you. Who the heck needs Hollywood's approval to become a suddenly acceptable demographic? I guess it's nice that we wise midlife women are no longer invisible to the silver screen crowd, but it comes just as we don't really give a damn whether they see us or not. One of life's ironies perhaps?
